Fortum ships converted into double hull tankers
On the 1st of March 2004 Remontowa S.A. signed a contract for conversion of two tankers belonging to a Finnish shipowner Fortum Shipping - part of the big energy group in Europe - Fortum Oil and Gas OY with the fleet of 29 tankers.
Finns invited best European shipyards to a tender. Remontowa has won, because as the only one had experience in range of services necessary for performing the contract.
Remontowa S.A. was the first shipyard in Europe which accomplished the conversions involving building double hulls onto the Norwegian vessels Ragnhild Knutsen and Tove Knutsen, what turned out to be a decisive factor for a Finnish shipowner in the conversion shipyard selection.
The conversion concerned two sister tankers: Tervi and Palva, 202.1 m long and 30.2 m wide, built in 1986. The first one - Palva - left Remontowa in July 2004 and the second one was redelivered after conversion at the end of 2004.
The main goal of the conversion was to build second side structures on both tankers, because in compliance with the newest safety regulations the units should have double hulls, i.e. not only double bottom, but double sides as well. To achieve this, about 715 tons of steel was used on each ship. New inner sides created new cargo and ballast tanks arrangement. Moreover, due to conversion, all major pipe systems were modified and extensive painting work was performed. The whole range of the maintenance and repair work was accomplished as well.
