Knutsen OAS Shuttle Tankers

In 2006, the Norwegian shipowner Knutsen OAS Shipping decided to convert its 35.000 dwt product/chemical tanker, delivered as new building, into a North Sea shuttle tanker.
The conversion took place at Remontowa S.A. On the 12 of June 2006 Gijon Knutsen arrived to Gdansk. It was the third conversion of similar vessel ( previously Betty Knutsen and Siri Knutsen for this owner.

The main tasks for the conversion were improvement of the ship’s manoeuvrability and positioning abilities (DP2) as well as the creation of new loading facilities (BLS). The vessel received one azimuth thruster 1200 kW, one genset and additionally KVOC system has been installed.

The installation of the bow cargo arrangement was aimed at facilitating and speeding up process of loading in high seas. So it is now possible to load crude oil onto Gijon Knutsenfrom variety of offshore facilities or from a conventional oil terminal through the midship manifold. BLS equipment has been fitted in a new hull structure installed on the forecastle deck. New loading facilities forward are connected with the existing cargo manifold via a new pipeline.
The vessel also received a CCTV system for the monitoring of the BLS area via cameras.

Vessel was modified with DP2 computerized system that allow the maintenance of position even in the hardest of weathers and during difficult manoeuvring conditions. The ship’s position references were also enhanced by HPR (Hydro-acoustic Position Reference) trunk, inserted in one of the ballast tanks.

Power & control systems were upgraded for the supply of new propulsion unit. One new generating set 1800 kW (Caterpillar made) was installed and all affected ship systems have been modified. In order to accommodate this set, a completely new auxiliary engine room was created in aft area. The PMS (Power Management System) as well as the integrated control alarm and monitoring system were significantly modified.

Additionally, vessel was equipped with 14 pcs of KVOC (Knutsen OAS own solution, idea & design, Remontowa S.A. fabrication and installation) tanks connected to existing cargo system, which handles now volatile organic compounds during off loading either from terminal or from an offshore installation.
