On the 21st of January 2004 there arrived to Remontowa for the non-typical conversion the Norwegian shuttle tanker equipped with STL unit - m/t Tove Knutsen owned by leader shipowner Knutsen OAS Shipping AS. The main task was to build a new inner bottom in centre tanks and new inner bulkheads in all wing cargo tanks (about 2.000 tons of steel) in compliance with the coming soon new maritime safety regulations required by EU rules.

The basic dimensions of the tanker have not changed only the capacity has been reduced. Besides, the ship’s dynamicpositioning system has been upgraded to DP2 class, which consisted of creating new auxiliary engine room (new generator set 2,3 MW) and replacement existing one of forward tunnel thruster with new azimuth thruster. The new azimuth thruster on the bow has doubled the main propulsion of the ship. In case of failure for example of the main engine or propeller thrust, the azimuth thruster will take their operations. The tunnel thrusters will take place of rudder machine (rudder blade) and in case of ability loss of rudder blade’s maneuvering, they will take the maneuvering of the ship. As part of this upgrading extensive work has been performed within control, power and automation systems. In the main engine room there have been changed the fire safety system from halon to CO2 as well vessel was equipped with local fire fighting systems. During conversion period the KVOC (recovering of vapours from the tanks during cargo operations) system has been installed onboard, which is the author’s system of Knutsen company. The extensive range of painting and maintenance work has been done.
Complete package of documentation including Class approved drawings, workshop drawings have been prepared by Remontowa’s Engineering & Design Office.
Tove Knutsen left the shipyard on the 6th of April 2004.

Before we attempted to conversion of Tove Knutsen, in November 2003 we rebuilt nineteen-year-old, 257-meters long Ragnhild Knutsen, belonging to the same shipowner.
We built new inner bulkheads in slope tanks (about 250 tons of steel) and the rest of the cargo wing tanks were excluded from exploatation. The capacity of the ship was reduced, but the unit meets the requirements of the Convention about the safety and exploitation of the ships on sea and it can still be used as the environmental friendly unit.
